Inheritance tax investments

There’s no reason why investors can’t keep more of their wealth in their family

Octopus Investments is the largest provider of investments that qualify for Business Property Relief, an established relief from inheritance tax. We have been managing BPR-qualifying investments since 2005, and now manage more than £3.9 billion across our range of products. Please read risk information below.

Reasons to invest

Greater access and control

Investments stay in the shareholder’s name, meaning they retain access to their wealth and can sell their shares later on if they need to.

Fast inheritance tax exemption

Investments that qualify for BPR should be 100% exempt from inheritance tax after just two years.

Supporting UK businesses

Our investments provide long-term capital to UK businesses with growth potential.

Risks to bear in mind

Capital at risk

The value of an investment, and any income from it, can fall as well as rise and investors may not get back the full amount they put in.

Tax relief can’t be guaranteed

Our solutions are based on current tax legislation which could change. Tax relief depends on the companies we invest in maintaining BPR-qualifying status. Treatment depends on individual circumstances.

The investment may be volatile and difficult to sell

The shares of AIM-listed and unlisted companies could fall or rise in value more than shares listed on the main market of the London Stock Exchange. They may also be harder to sell.

BPR is assessed on a case-by-case basis

We cannot guarantee that the investments we make will qualify for BPR in every case in the future. HMRC will only conduct a BPR assessment after the death of an investor, to confirm whether the companies invested in qualify for BPR at that time.
